Inversion

Overview

倒置 Inversion は、強調したい句を文頭に置いて、語順を並び替える。

So do I / Neither do I

• “I’m a student”
  • So am I.
  • I’m, too.
• “I was born in Japan.” So was I.
• “I work for a software company.” So do I.
• “I went to the movies.” So did I.
• “I’ve ever been to Paris.” So have I.
• “I’d like to play pool.” So would I.
• “I can’t speak Enlgish”
  • Neither can I.
  • I can’t, either.
• “I don’t want to go there.” Neither do I.

neither / nor

主語と動詞/助動詞を置き換える。

• I’ve never seen him, nor have I heard from him.
• Neither have I seen him, nor have I heard from him.

There / Here

There / Here も倒置が起こる。代名詞が主語の場合は倒置しない。

• There is a book.
• There are some books.
• There it is.
  • There is it.
• Here is your key.
• Here comes the bus.
• Here it is.
  • Here is it.
• Here you are. （探しているものは）ここにあります
  • Here are you.
• Here we are. 目的地に着きました
  • Here are we.
• This is it. この場合の it は目的語。「それですよ」「いよいよですね（来たるべき状況になった）」

感嘆表現で What を文頭に置く表現がある。主語と動詞は倒置しない。

Subjunctive Inversion

仮定法の If を省略して、倒置する表現がある。

Subject-verb Inversion

• 位置
  • Beside the TV stands a decorative plant.
  • A decorative plant stands beside the TV.
  • On the table stands a beatuiful flower in a yellow vase.
• 引用
  • “Why don’t we go out for lunch?”, said Bob.
• 連結動詞
  • The representative of this project is she.
